Ryan from Spring 2024

Which events or activities did you find the most satisfying and why?

I had a great time learning how to play the Koto in Koto Club. I also had the pleasure of participating in doing the omikoshi as well. The Japanese Culture Trips were also a great experience. Being able to participate in actibities and events exclusive to Japans culture was a worthwhile experience.

What were the most productive and interesting aspects of the program for you? The least interesting and productive?

The most interesting aspects were the group sxcursions every Saturday. I wouldn't say that I had a uninteresting time at all, but the least engagibg for me was probably the 音読 portion of class.

What did you find most valuable in the Culture Course?

Going to different locations that had a great significance in Japanese History was very valuable. Odawara Castle, Kamakura, Asakusa, and Akihabara were great. Also going to experience the earthquake simulator was nice too, and we learned what to do in case one happens and was avaluable information.

Any comments or tips for prospective/new KCP students?

Utilize the kitchen, going out too much will definitely make things harder for you towards the end and if you can, be as active as you can, meaning be a part of the community somehow.

Testimonials

I’d say that the two weeks we got as Summer Short Term students before starting the actual Summer Term with the international students helped a lot. It prepared me for the intensity and structure of the program. I’d say the structure of the program and every day classes were very helpful in advancing my Japanese skills. Switching from some review and practice with my peers, to dictation, to kanji, etc, was engaging. I just think the intensity and structure of the program was ideal, at least for me.
