Takahashi Sensei’s rhythmic repetition memory exercises were fun and helpful.

Charles from Summer Short-term 2024

Which events or activities did you find the most satisfying and why?

The excursion to the Yamanashi prefecture because Takeda Shingen’s story and temple were very beautiful and grand. The peaches from the orchard were also very delicious!

What were the most productive and interesting aspects of the program for you? The least interesting and productive?

I feel like the most productive aspects were the example conversations and breaking down the pieces within them. I felt like the short-term section was a much better pace of learning the language than the summer term. Also Takahashi Sensei’s rhythmic repetition memory exercises were fun and helpful. I found the least helpful aspects were the standard term memorization at the beginning of class.

What activities or materials did you find most helpful (e.g., pair work, drill practice, tests, small group sessions, textbooks, games)?

I found the pair work was the most helpful when my partner knew the material and was able to effectively practice the exercise.

Any comments or tips for prospective/new KCP students?

Pack extremely light, especially clothes-wise. Make sure to bring clothes like light pants because it becomes awkward being the only person wearing shorts. Also don’t doubt your own Japanese ability especially if you’re just starting, don’t feel bad about being in level 1. Also don’t be afraid to make friends, there were some people that I really got along with but we only bonded in the last few weeks when we could’ve connected immediately.

Testimonials

If you’re considering KCP, just sign up. If you have to, save up for it. It was worth it. I continue to learn the language, I continue to make new friends, I continue to find new, unfamiliar and exciting places and all of this was possible because I made the decision to learn at KCP. I have met some really great people (friends as well as teachers) who have helped me grow as a person. I’m thankful for this time I’ve spent here. It really has gone by too fast but I will forever remember the memories I’ve made here.
